Exploring how our relationships with community shape storytelling and self-identity

The work of Solena Aguilar utilizes pattern-making and mixed media to express the complexity of our intersectional identities and how they translate into a mosaic of remarkable relationships. By exploring our different relationships in community, they create vibrancy and push emotion. Solena’s work draws from their Nicaraguen-American upbringing centered around music, dance, education, environment, and respect for those who came before.

They believe art is for everyone to witness and experience. They work to deliver these projects in distinct spaces such as classrooms and community organizations to reach audiences across different ages and backgrounds.

  • I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, focusing on Graphic Design, Ethnic Studies, and Journalism

  • I am inspired by artists who let the idea dictate the medium. I am a multimedia artist because there are so many different ways to represent a concept. I look up to Lido Pimienta, Little Simz, Chicome Itzcuintli Amatlapalli (@micorazonmexica), my community in Harlem and Brooklyn, and my family in San Francisco. These are all people who are able to utilize and honor their environment and have respect for the audience they are looking to communicate with.

  • I am currently the Graphic Design Associate at Harlem Children’s Zone and Art Director at Veggie Mijxs working to deliver resources and information to BIPOC and underrepresented communities.
